Dr. Long received his Bachelor’s and Doctor of Optometry degrees from Indiana University. He did his residency at a New York Veteran’s hospital and during his residency he received comprehensive Low Vision Certification via training at the Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
In 1997, Dr. Long and his wife, Angela Long, O.D., opened Long Family Eye Care in Bloomington, Indiana to practice general optometry and for Dr. Long to develop his low vision specialty. Dr. Long has lectured extensively on low vision and has been on staff at the I.U. School of Optometry and proctored students for general and low vision examinations.
Over the past decade, Dr. Long has opened the Vision Aid Center inside Long Family Eye Care, he has trained with renowned Low Vision Diplomat, Richard Shuldiner, O.D., F.A.A.O., and he is now recognized as one of a select few Fellows in the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists. Dr. Long formed Midwest Low Vision to help more low vision patients and, in addition to the Bloomington location, current Indiana satellite offices include Indianapolis, Evansville, New Albany, Lafayette, and Covington.
As a member of the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce and the Bloomington Sunrise Rotary Club, Dr. Long supports the growth of his community. He and his wife have two young daughters, Emily and Madelyn, and a doggie named Bella. The family enjoys music, hiking, biking and "movie nights."

Ermal Hunsucker
Dr. Long’s low vision patient, Mrs. Hunsucker, suffering from the effects of Macular Degeneration, simply wanted to see the TV better and read newsprint. As Dr. Long says, “While it’s not always the case, one pair of glasses was able to serve both purposes.” And as Ermal says, “I now order every newspaper I can find!”

Margaret Pillar, 85 years old, came to see IALVS doctor, W. Jarrod Long, O.D. from 3 hours away with goals of reading and seeing her TV more easily -- the drugstore magnifiers she had were no longer helping. After spending an hour with Dr. Long she was able to see how the special glasses would help for TV before even ordering them.
After a few weeks, Brandy, Dr. Long’s technician, made a routine follow-up call, and according to Margaret, both pairs (she also purchased reading glasses for $650) were working fine and she was showing them off to friends. She jokingly asked, “why did I spend $1850 for glasses to watch such rotten shows on TV?”
