Have you been told nothing can be done?
Members of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS) are using miniaturized binoculars, telescopes and reverse telescopes to help people who have lost vision from retinitis pigmentosa and other vision limiting conditions.
Joel Cohen, a noted attorney, sought help for an uncommon retinal problem that severely interfered with his vision and made him dependent on a seeingeye dog. “I was told nothing more could be done but, I wasn’t willing to accept that.
I thought surely, there must be something more I can do,” said Cohen. Cohen sought out an IALVS (International Academy of Low Vision Specialists) optometrist, for a second opinion.
After a thorough low vision exam, a special telescope was custom designed to increase Cohen’s side vision. “With increased side vision and more confidence to try, I can walk without needing my guide dog.”
Telescope glasses can cost between $1,500 and $2,500 - a small price to pay for better vision and more independence.
The International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS) is an organization of Low Vision Optometrists devoted to the principle that there is life after vision loss. Using telescopic, microscope and prismatic glasses, member doctors help those with vision deficiencies to perform daily activities like reading, writing, playing cards, watching tv and even driving.
