International Academy of Low Vision Specialists - IALVS

Common Vision Problems We Can Help Treat

There are several types of vision problems that cannot be effectively corrected with surgery, medication or traditional vision aids like glasses and contacts. If you are suffering from a vision impairment such as this and it interferes with your ability to do everyday activities like reading or driving, then you are suffering from what eye doctors call "low vision".

Some of the most common eye diseases that cause low vision include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and scotoma. The vision problems these diseases cause can be so severe that your central vision is completely distorted or blurred. This can prevent you from focusing on the faces of those around you or from even being able to take care of yourself on a daily basis.

To help treat these vision problems and help you maintain your independence, our low vision specialist will work with you to analyze the vision you have remaining and then create custom made low vision aids that can improve your quality of life.

Special Eye Exams that Assess Your Vision Problems

Before our low vision specialists can create the customized low vision aids you need, he or she will first conduct a thorough examination to analyze your remaining eyesight. This exam will be different from the routine exams you've had for eye vision problems in the past because our doctors use specialized charts that are closer to your eyes and have more gradations. During the tests you will also be asked to use your peripheral vision as opposed to your central vision, since that part of your vision has been damaged.

Correcting Vision Problems with Low Vision Aids

After your vision problems have been thoroughly assessed, our specialists will ask you to make a vision "wish list" of all the daily activities you would like to be able to do the most. This list could include driving, reading menus, playing cards or watching television. Based on your list and the level of vision you have now, our specialists can carefully adjust your normal prescriptions and then provide you with custom low vision aids like magnifiers, low vision reading glasses, telescopic glasses or other electronic aids.
